End of Year Fic Roundup

Stories that were posted (if not necessarily written) during the second half of 2009 (all links go to AO3)*:

Jericho (82,602 words)

The Kill Point (3,707 words)

Stargate Atlantis (805 words)

Supernatural (24,781 words)

Total word count for July-December 2009: 106,482**

Word count of works posted in the first half of 2009: ~ 80,059

Total for 2009:  186,541…!!** No wonder the muses got burned out a little toward the end. And a big, BIG Thank You to Tanaqui, who beta’ed most (and probably all) for me.

For comparison’s sake, word count of fic posted in the last few years:

  • 2008:    73,811
  • 2007:    60,512
  • 2006:  128,653
  • 2005:    10,370*

* Since I can only be certain of when fic got posted, and stuff gets written all the time, then put on ice, sometimes for months or even a year, the numbers do not accurately reflect actual writing. 2006, for example, includes The Long Road Home, most of which was written over the course of 2005, while 2009 includes two long stories (Journey’s End and The Price Of Betrayal) that were both mostly written in previous years.

** AO3 counts words differently from Open Office, and generally seems to end up with a lower number, so the actual amount of words for this year is probably higher. Or lower, depending on which system you want to put your faith in :-).

50! Stories! And writing woes….

A couple days ago, I posted my fiftieth (yes, five-oh!) story for SPN. Now, for some people, that might not be much of an achievement, but it does make Supernatural my most prolific fandom by far! Even more surprising, seeing how the muses still are extremely reluctant to come out and play–except for the occasional foray into wing!fic or weird second person POV episode retellings (neither published as of yet)….

So, I’m trying to adhere to the credo that you can fix anything but a blank page, and try to write something every most days. Eight hours of crazy!work!stress isn’t exactly conducive to much fic writing, however, so it’s mostly in the weekends and sometimes on Wednesdays, when I work half days.

Anyway, if someone sees my wayward muses wandering about somewhere? Please point them over thisaway, cause I miss them…. Fortunately, [info]tanaquific is a busybee writer at the moment, and is keeping me well amused with stories that are most id-pleasing.

Fic times

Writer’s block hasn’t entirely resolved itself (or the Muses are still absent due to me having been on holiday, which always makes it hard to get back into the game), but even so, I have fic!

Fandom: Jericho
Title: Lucky Man
Rating: General
Characters: Jake/Heather
Word count: 1,600
Summary: Jake Green is a lucky man: he has a wife that knows him better than he knows himself. And she has a surprise for him.

***

Written quite a while ago, when I still had muses, but collecting dust for some time while I worked out a couple of other things. Inspired by thoughts about the Roadrunner.

***

Fandom: Jericho
Title: The Harder You Try
Rating: Teen
Characters: Beck
Word count: 1,000
Summary: In spite of Major Beck’s best efforts, things are going from bad to worse, and the murder of John Goetz will bring everything to a head. Even so, Beck feels obliged to give Jericho a last chance.

***

Written at the height of the writer’s block phase, if you can believe that. Inspired by the [info]cliche_bingo prompt Second Person Narrative, apparently 2nd POV wasn’t enough for the muse, she also added present tense, both styles I hardly ever use.

I can remember writing 2nd POV only once, years ago, but that was for a Choose Your Own Adventure-type story, which by nature addresses the reader as a participant in the story. This, on the other hand, has no “reader = you”, so it was a strange, if interesting, experience.

Fandom: Supernatural
Title: Lost And Found
Rating: General
Characters: Dean
Word count: 1,700
Summary: Dean has never noticed anything special about his amulet. But when he loses it during a hunt, he feels compelled to go back for it.

***

My submission for [info]spn_summergen, this was finished quite a while ago, in mid-July, to be exact. Long before the writer’s block strike 😉 But now that the master list has gone up, I can finally claim it as mine!

And speaking of [info]spn_summergen, make sure you also check out the wonderful story that [info]kinsinger wrote for me, Music:  Sam was making his way through the endless fields of Iowa when the cassette player in the Impala finally gave out with a loud crackle of static. She did a great job with my prompt “Something to do with Sam’s iPod that Dean finds in the Impala”. Go, read!

Mid-year fic roundup

Really should’ve done this a few weeks ago, but… it’s time for the mid-year fic roundup! All stories posted (if not necessarily written) between January 1st en June 30th, 2009.

Dark Angel

Jericho

Lord of the Rings

Stargate Atlantis

Supernatural

The Kill Point

*blinks at list* Um… wow? Even with the double counts for the crossovers, that’s one heck of a lot of fic!

Supernatural ficlet

Fandom: Supernatural
Title: Desperate Remedy
Rating: General
Characters: Sam, Ruby
Word count: 575
Summary: Sam’s having trouble learning how to kill demons with his mind. Ruby has a solution.

***

Probably another of those ‘mandatory’ ficlets for something in canon that just demands exploring.

Drabble, double drabble

(Also, [info]tanaquific and I are getting thisclose to posting the first of our post-series Awesome!Jakeverse (A!Jverse for short) Jericho stories. Squeee! I haven’t been this prolific in, well, forever!)

But first:

Fandom: Supernatural
Title
: Watcher In The Shadows
Rating
: General
Characters
: Jess
Word count: 200
Summary: Even in death, Jess still cares for Sam.

***

Initially drafted while home sick with a headache and feeling like a zombie. I think it shows in that it’s somewhat… weird. Tanaqui likes it, though, so I can’t have gone wrong too badly 🙂

***

Fandom: Jericho
Title: Old Habits
Rating: Teen
Characters: Jake/Emily
Word count: 100
Summary: Most of his life, Jake has drifted into situations… and only realized he’s made the wrong choices far, far too late…

***

Already part of the Awesome!Jakeverse, in my mind, though it can be read separately.

Fic announcement: Supernatural fixit

Fandom: Supernatural
Title: Blind Man’s Bluff
Rating: General
Characters: Dean, Sam
Word count: 1,958
Summary: Grieving for yet another lost friend, Dean and Sam are in for a surprise. (spoilers for Supernatural 4.15 Death Takes A Holiday)

***

My first thought when Dean brought Pamela into the room was, “Yay!” But as soon as she opened her mouth, my second thought was, “Who the hell is this bitter, cynical woman? ‘Cause it sure as hell ain’t Pamela Barnes!”

Mr. Carver, if you make me wanna write weirdo fix-it fic, you’re doing it wrong…!

Fanfic100 fic recs pt. 1

For starters, a few oldies that I rec’ed before in my own journal, but that bear repeating.

Title: A Thousand Square Miles of Wide Open
Author: ErinRua
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Dean, OC
Prompt:  026 Teammates
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Dean gets in touch with his inner cowboy. Set pre-series, shortly before Season 1, when Dean was flying solo.
Why: Erin wrote this in reply to my prompt for Cowboy!Dean, and wow, did she deliver!

As I said in my journal at the time: “Erin makes us feel every agonizing mile Dean has to suffer on horseback [to get to where he has a job to do]. Her landscape descriptions are very vivid, and you can almost smell the desert or touch the dust. OC Chris is likable and credible. He’s your typical cowboy: gruff, a man of few words, and clearly in love with his land and willing to do whatever it takes to keep it.”

Why the prompt teammates? Dean and Chris have to work together, each using his own skill set, to get the job done. And while Dean is definitely out of his depth in the first section of the story, the tables get turned in the second half, which makes for an interesting contrast.

Title: When the Hour Turns Over
Author:  Dotfic
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Dean, Sam
Prompt:  091 Birthday
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: In which Dean turns thirty.
Why: In an evening of moments leading up to Dean’s thirtieth birthday, not much of anything actually happens. And yet, there is so much going on beneath the surface…

Fic announcement: Supernatural coda

Oops… almost forgot to announce this…

Fandom: Supernatural
Title: Nobody’s Fault But Mine
Rating: General
Characters: Dean, Sam
Word count: 1,280
Summary: Deep down, Dean had always known Sam was no longer the same person he had left behind when he died. But to discover Sam trusted Ruby more than him? That cut deeper than all the harsh words spoken under the siren’s spell. (spoilers for Supernatural 4.14 Sex And Violence)

***

This was an interesting coda to write. Show kinda ended in a strange place, which in itself didn’t bother me too much—Winchesters claiming all is well when all is anything but, is nothing new, really. They are masters at (self-)delusion.

And it required some thinking about what was said in the episode, and what wasn’t said, and what the dynamics lying under the surface of what we saw were really about. The end result was a jumble of snippets of dialog, which I had to move around a bit to make it fit. Quite the deviation from my usual mode of “start at beginning, write toward end”…

Fic Announcement: and another Crazy Crossover

Fandoms: Lord of the Rings/Supernatural
Title: Seeking God (also here)
Rating: General
Characters: Sam Winchester and Faramir
Word count: 947
Summary: Sam Winchester is determined to find answers. And when he can’t find them in our world, he’ll just have to go look elsewhere.

***

It took me a while to figure out how to connect these two. They have so much in common that it was hard to decide. But once I knew what I wanted the story to be about, it basically wrote itself. One of those cases where I not only like to have written, but where the process of writing itself is fun too.

Linda, I hope you like it too!
