Writer’s Glee

You know what the advantage is of having a one-woman fandom? There’s nobody that’ll tell you what you can or can’t do. So, if I want to let out my inner romantic, or embrace every bad!fic trope there is, and write about it, I can! No concerns about what readers might think, or if it fits with anyone else’s interpretation of canon, or if there are ‘isms I should worry about, there’s just fic.

And you know what? Writing exactly what you want is great fun!

Of course, it also means that I have spent my entire weeklong holiday not working on what I’d planned to work on, like OTW translations, or finally addressing the Dark Angel AU beta notes, or finishing my John & Bobby fic, or writing any of the half dozen other Supernatural stories on the list. But I did write two ficlets and nearly 15,000 words of fixit fic, including some 2,500 words of slow smut, so I do feel quite accomplished.

OTPs, shippiness and UST–or lack thereof

[info]tanaquisga floated an interesting theory yesterday about my new-found obsession with The Kill Point and the desire to write a shippy bad!fic AU where the guy(s) get the girl(s) and escape off into the sunset(*) as opposed to the decidedly unsatisfactory canonical ending: I’m jonesing for romance!

Now, I have to say that Supernatural, despite all its awesomeness, is indeed rather light on UST and ’ships—at least for those of us who watch without slash goggles. Thus, after several years of me obsessing over Supernatural, she may very well have a point.

So, thoughts? Is it possible to suffer from lack of UST? Ship malnutrition? Does having favorite pairings advance your viewing pleasure?

(*) It’s also not entirely unlikely I will go and write that, seeing I solved a major plot hurdle last night while taking a leisurely bath (which is when the muses pounce…). All I need now is some sort of ending, because off into the sunset is not it!

This was written for the [info]spook_me ficathon, with the prompts space monster, Village of the Damned and Bloody Pit of Horror. It was a hard story to write, and for the longest time I didn’t think I would make the deadline at all.

First, there was no inspiration whatsoever. None of the prompts sparked, and I really didn’t see how I could make those prompts come together (fortunately, spook_me is a laid-back challenge where only one prompt was required so I gave up on the idea of using all three rather quickly). Then, I wanted to do three thousand different things in the same story (hint at Sam’s powers; explain his fear of clowns; have real aliens; have a really scary space monster with horns and claws).

The only thing that was clear from early on was that I wanted to have a wee!Sammy. Don’t ask why; it was just what the story wanted!

When the first draft was done, I really hated it. I had changed tack several times during the writing, and it was a mess. Fortunately, [info]tanaquispn convinced me to let her read it, and then convinced me that it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. With renewed vigor and after a few days’ leaving it be, I went back with scalpel and glue, and the second draft showed a much more coherent story than it had seemed before.

I was on to something! After that, it was merely a matter of finetuning: dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s and putting the finishing touches on it before sending it back to [info]tanaquispn for her red pen special–which she delivered beautifully :) And lo and behold, I had a story on the eve of the deadline.

Oopst, I totally forgot to announce last week that I posted this!

This story was inspired by the smudgy look of a newly crawled-out-of-his-grave Dean in Supernatural 4.01, Lazarus Rising. Tanaqui and I agreed that a filthy Dean still looked pretty damn good. And then one thing led to another. Like imagining more dirty!Dean. With hot showers, and back washing… And smut.

Basically, I blame [info]juno_magic for this one, even if she didn’t intend to spawn plot bunnies. But she pointed out this page (warning: NWS!) while my muse was in naughty!Dean mode. And then there was that scene with Dean and Sam’s iPod in 401… and one thing just led to another.

And don’t forget: the deadline for submitting prompts to [info]3some_ficfest is this Tuesday, September 30. We have some awesome suggestions for threesomes in various fandoms already, but since there can never be enough plot bunnies, we could do with some more! Leave your prompts here.

Yay, the [info]kamikazeremix fics have been revealed! So I can finally post mine in my archive and point you to it. The story I was assigned hinged heavily on the Sam/Dean slash element, with the actual case only hinted at. There were several directions I could have taken this: work out the case fic elements—either what happened before, or during the original story—, write an epilogue type story from Sam’s POV including hard slash, or re-tell from another POV than the original.

After some debating and toying with those ideas, I started leaning toward an outsider POV story, something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. But what really cinched it was this:

“Father Parelli kept fingering his collar as if it didn’t fit well and chafed him, while Father Jerrod jumped every time someone addressed him by name, giving the speaker a startled, guilty look, like he expected God to strike him down any second over some perceived sin.”

Once I had that, I had my angle. The rest was just juggling timelines and details, and far more researching of Catholic Mass than ever made it into the story.

Kamikaze fics, ficathons, and more fic news

So, yesterday the [info]kamikazeremix fics went live. They’re still anonymous, so I can’t yet pimp the story I wrote, but I can point you in the direction of the story that was written for me, based on my Supernatural fic Triplicity. I have to say, the remixed version went into a direction I never anticipated. But of course that’s the entire point of a remix: surprise!

And if one crazy challenge wasn’t enough, the evil (yes…) [info]tanaquisga (now also known as [info]tanaquispn, for which I suppose I’m to blame :) ) pointed me to a Halloween challenge at [info]spook-me. So I have now signed up to write a Supernatural story with a Monster from Space as the creature… 8O

Well, what’s the point of a challenge if I’m not challenging myself, eh?

Finally, I’ve gotten around to putting together an archive to collect my single story fandoms: fandoms for which I’ve only written one piece of fiction so they don’t warrant an archive of their own. The color scheme still leaves something to be desired, but we’ll get around to that some day…

In the author’s notes of this story, it says “Because I promised myself I wouldn’t touch S3’s cliffhanger with a ten foot pole… and because I wanted to write a Cowboy!Dean fic.”

Supernatural Season 3 ended with a cliffhanger of epic proportions. Knowing there will be a Season 4, and knowing that whatever we speculate, Kripke’ll prove us dead wrong, I told myself I would not, not, NOT even think about how things might be resolved. It would be a waste of time, and I have plenty of other stories less likely to get jossed with the first episode of the new season to work on.

Naturally, the muses had other ideas…

Once I came up with the time travel concept, I though, well, okay, there’s still this Cowboy!Dean plot bunny, maybe I can kill both bunnies with one story. But as the story progressed (and trust me, I don’t think I’ve ever written a story that changed tack so many times during the writing process), I realized that there would be no Dean to speak of. After all, at the time, Dean’s kinda busy being dead…*

Though I knew fairly early on that Sam would meet Samuel Colt, and that it would be his knowledge that allowed Colt to make the special demon-killing gun that played such an important part in the YED-story line, the actual appearance of Azazel, and the realization that it was Sam’s time travel that started the entire Winchester tragedy in the first place, came as much as a surprise to me as to Sam and (hopefully) the reader.  Predestination paradox. It’s the sort of thing that doesn’t bear thinking about too much, or you’ll risk migraines and spraining your brain. But it’s a great concept to play with as an author and despite the headaches, I had fun.

* I did manage to pawn off the Cowboy!Dean plot bunny onto [info]erinrua, who has done a far better job of tackling it than I could ever do.

Remix, anyone?

So, did anyone else read the preview of the next Supernatural tie-in novel Bone Key written by Keith DeCandido (who also wrote the first tie-in, Nevermore).*

If you did read it, did you manage to make it past the first few paragraphs? All the way to where he again fucks up Dean’s eye color (not that the color of Dean’s eye has any relevance at that point to begin with…)?

I didn’t… Zzzzz…

And I’m not sure if I feel sorry for myself, because I’d like nothing more than a big, juicy, ‘real’ novel in the Supernatural world to read, or for Mr. DeCandido, who gets outshone as an author by a really large part of the Supernatural fandom fic authors.

I can forgive him for having those rather big chunks of exposition, because, after all, the intended audience of tie-in novels are not the fans but Jane Q Public who outnumbers us big time. I cannot forgive the terrible pacing (yawn…) or the dialog that reads like he consulted a “How To Write Modern American Vernacular” instead of how real people speak. That’s just plain bad writing.

So, I’m inclined to feel more sorry for myself. After all, DeCandido has gotten paid for his… work.

I’m half-wanting to call a “Remix the novel”-challenge. And keep hoping someone will MST it, or spork it to pieces. Because, really, we can do better than that, can’t we?

* With thanks to [info]ficwriter1966 who first alerted me to it.

ETA: I love fandom…! [info]tanaquisga took up my challenge and condensed the preview into a 100 word drabble.

Fic announcement

Fandom: Supernatural
Title: Beasts Under The Bed
Rating: General (PG13)
Characters: Sam, Dean
Warnings: Some swear words
Spoilers: 3.10 Dream A Little Dream Of Me
Word count: 7,680
Summary: Brothers always look out for each other: in life, in death… And in dreams.

Heh, no, I didn’t write this story in the short time since returning from my holiday. Far from it. It was started shortly after the episode Dream A Little Dream Of Me aired, and I worked on it on and off at various times. First, I had to figure out how to discern the dream sequences from ‘real time’ events. Then I realized I also needed flashback at various points. So, now the story has past tense, present tense, and past perfect tense sections. Just to keep you (and me!) on our toes :)

[info]tanaquisga was kind enough to read over an earlier draft and give invaluable critique, and [info]erinrua nitpicked the final draft while I was chasing polar bears all over the Arctic.

Who says life’s not good? :)
