OTPs, shippiness and UST–or lack thereof

[info]tanaquisga floated an interesting theory yesterday about my new-found obsession with The Kill Point and the desire to write a shippy bad!fic AU where the guy(s) get the girl(s) and escape off into the sunset(*) as opposed to the decidedly unsatisfactory canonical ending: I’m jonesing for romance!

Now, I have to say that Supernatural, despite all its awesomeness, is indeed rather light on UST and ‘ships—at least for those of us who watch without slash goggles. Thus, after several years of me obsessing over Supernatural, she may very well have a point.

So, thoughts? Is it possible to suffer from lack of UST? Ship malnutrition? Does having favorite pairings advance your viewing pleasure?

(*) It’s also not entirely unlikely I will go and write that, seeing I solved a major plot hurdle last night while taking a leisurely bath (which is when the muses pounce…). All I need now is some sort of ending, because off into the sunset is not it!

Ha! I knew the muses would solve it for you eventually. *g*

*sigh* I really am going to have to watch this show if you’re going to write this much fic for it, aren’t I?

Hee, yeah, the muses came up with a way. Now I need some sort of end to work toward, I’m not gonna start a fic when I have no clue where it’s going.

As for watching, only if you like (but my fic will make more sense for it, yes 🙂 ). We’ll have to figure out how to get you a copy, though…

P.S. The good news: it’s only eight episodes! 😉

Oddly enough I was just e mailing a friend and remarking one reason I like SPN so much is the emphasis on fraternal rather than romantic love.I cannot see why people are so obsessed with shipping. By all means in the final episode let the brothers meet nice girls, get married and live next door to each other, but leave romance until then.
There are many different kinds of human love, but only the romantic sort gets much air time on TV>

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I love, love, love the brothers for their brotherliness. No slash goggles here! But apparently, a part of me also craves some romance once in a while.

Very interesting theory! I think it IS possible to suffer UST/ship malnutrition – after all, when a show doesn’t have enough substance to hold me with the plot, it’s the ‘ship that keeps me watching. (Or more accurately, reading the fic and catching an episode here and there.)

I think I need both forms of entertainment.

Yes, I think entertainment is like food: nobody likes to eat the same dish every meal!

There has to be at least some UST to keep me watching, but I also want a satisfying conclusion to my ship. And I want it in canon, not just in fanfiction. Sadly it’s lacking from most TV shows; either they are cancelled too early or they go on for too long… *sigh*

But I wonder if that’s one of the reasons why I’ve never been into slash (which may be hard to believe :p). But it’s not like Sam and Dean are ever going to end up together on the show, so why bother? Thus I’ve never watched a single episode of Supernatural. XD

Are there any good shows on TV these days, when it comes to UST?
